Perspective
"There is neither happiness nor misery in the world; there is only the comparison of one state with another, nothing more.

- Alexandre Dumas

Thanksgiving, for Americans, is this week. What are you grateful for in 2020?

Did the pandemic hit you with constraints? I love Whitney Johnson’s approach to growth through disruption. She’s a huge fan of constraints. Here’s just one of Whitney’s declarative statements: “To build momentum toward the life you dream of, you need resistance. You need structure. And constraints provide both.”

Think Whitney’s wrong? Who can forget Francis Ford Coppola’s famous quote about making Apocalypse Now: "We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little we went insane."

And Twyla Tharp: “Those whom the Gods wish to destroy they give infinite resources.”

Yup. Less is more.

So, how did this year’s constraints and limitations help you grow? What did you lose this year? How did losing it actually help you?

How did your perspective change? Misery and happiness are relative. As a Californian, I am now insanely grateful for every day that the air is clear and breathable. I used to take air for granted, but after this year’s fire season, every clear day is a blessing.

It has been strange and wonderful in 2020 to have the time (and constraints) to give luxurious attention to the moments of daily life.

In the dumpster fire/obstacle course/hazing ritual of our year, it’s been hard to step back and really think about what we’ve learned, what we’re grateful for, what we see differently. But if we take the time to do that, we’ll be so much better prepared for 2021!

Here’s to a new year informed by all of the amazing things we learned in this one!
