Repeat yourself
"The right amount of repeating yourself is about 10x more than you think it is."
-- Ben Gilbert
In August I wrote about repeating yourself. But here I am again, repeating myself about reminding you to repeat yourself. Why? Because of podcasts.
First, in Acquired’s Microsoft Volume II podcast, Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal had a discussion about the years when Microsoft’s strategy was less clear to its own employees, its customers and the market at large. Ben talked about the right number of times leaders must repeat themselves.
HARD AGREE from me. You know you’ve repeated your company strategy enough when your entire company can repeat it out loud in lockstep with you, when they almost roll their eyes when you say it because they know exactly what’s coming. Unless and until that happens, keep saying it over and over again. It’s the best way to ensure that people will make the right choices to contribute to the company’s success.
Second, on The Wilderness (a Pod Save America show), Anat Shenker-Osorio, who I'd never heard of before (I'm not a political junkie), was a fascinating listen. Her expertise is mass communication in political campaigns, perhaps the toughest communication challenge there is.
She said: "Say fewer things. Say them more often." I was like, THAT'S THE BEST COMMUNICATIONS ADVICE I'VE EVER HEARD.
Yes. Less. Said more. Let’s all do that.
In eleven years as a communications coach, I’ve repeated and repeated a few core principles to my clients:
Pause - it’s the Swiss army knife of communications tools
Tell stories - nothing captures attention and converts hearts and minds like a story
Repeat yourself - because, see above
Please. Repeat yourself. Distill your core message to a
memorable soundbite. And then say it over and over again.
“You made us think in a different way,” said participants after a series of workshops.
