ISSUE 155

Massive change. Massive fun.
"History doesn't repeat itself but it often rhymes."

-- Mark Twain

It might be because I’m 200 years old, but I can’t read any think piece about generative AI without remembering the think pieces about the internet that were thick on the ground in 1995.

Almost thirty years ago, we had so many big ideas about what Java and the internet would do. About half of our ideas, hopes, and fears turned out to be laughably wrong. Many turned out to be at least a decade early. And a few were exactly right.

We’re in the same place now. How many millions of words have been written and said about generative AI? How many of them will wind up being truly prescient? Just like 1995, fewer than we would hope. In the years ahead, generative AI will bring amazing benefits that no one has dreamed of, as well as threats we have not yet imagined.

If you’re responsible for communicating about AI, what can you do??

Every person working to explain the potential of AI has a chance to create language that is elastic, simple, hopeful, and benign enough that it won’t foreclose opportunities we haven’t yet imagined. Those who fail to do so will be re-writing their messages from scratch every three months, which will confuse the market and drive everyone insane. Those who do will carry us into a future that none of us can see clearly today.

It’s going to be a rollicking couple of years as we see how these fundamental innovations change everything. It’s going to be a rollercoaster not just for executives and the communications people who scramble to support them, but for media, pundits, regulators, and academics too.

Our next few years, as were the first years of the Web, will be a marathon, run at a sprinting pace. Stay hydrated everybody!
