The holidays will be upon us in two seconds, so I’m thinking about hostessing and gifts, which reminds me of my favorite client advice:
“Your talk is a gift, not a performance.”

Why is this the one sentence I repeat more than any other when I’m coaching clients??

Because if you want someone’s attention, what you’re saying must be worth their time. If it isn’t, not only will you lose their attention, you might undermine your brand. Time and attention are precious resources. If you squander attention, all you’ll gain is ill will.

Because people appreciate givers, not takers. Think about the needy attention-seekers in your life. Are these the people you want to invite to a dinner party? Are these the people you call when you feel down? NO. We instinctively turn away from people who are all about themselves. If you bask in standing on a stage with a mic, your audience will feel it and shut down.

Because no one will buy what you’re selling if it doesn’t meet a need or a desire they have. Joseph Parker may have been a minister, but his advice applies to business too. Who in your audience is miserable because they are trying to integrate 18 different forms of unstructured data into one system? Who in your audience has so far failed to get their COO to fund a critical initiative? We all suffer at work. Heal our suffering and you’ve given us an incredible gift!
