On December 8, Erin Griffith wrote a piece in The New York Times headlined, “This is insanity” about how investors are chasing startups to hurl money at them. Then came the DoorDash and AirbnbIPOs. Tech exits in 2020 are reaching levels not seen since 1999. Uh oh. 2000 was great, but then came 2001. . .
In contrast, according to Feeding America: The coronavirus pandemic has
left millions of families without stable employment. More than 50 million people, including 17 million children, may experience food insecurity in 2020.
What’s my point? In 2021, so much help is needed. So many organizations and people in the tech world have immense capacity to help. Many do help!
For example, on December 7, my brother, Bart Poulson, who has been called the ‘Mr. Rogers of Data Science’ got an email from his publisher at LinkedIn Learning. In June 2020, Microsoft and LinkedIn partnered to help people impacted by the COVID economy. They unlocked several of their courses best suited to helping people reskill and find good jobs - including several courses (translated in several languages) created by my exceptional brother. In the email on Monday they told him that, because of the second and third waves of the virus, they are extending the program into 2022.
What I love about this LinkedIn
Learning program is that it is accessible, pragmatic, and relevant. It’s a wonderful way to tangibly help people impacted by the dramatic shifts in our economy.
