ISSUE 107

Standing on Pudding
"The most important thing is to remember
the most important thing."

--
Suzuki Roshi

In March 2020 we all pivoted hard and fast to virtual and digital communication. My advice then was pretty simple: Focus entirely on what your audience needs; tell stories; be brief.

In April 2022, we and our teams and our customers and partners have been through more consecutive crises than we ever thought possible (A whole fleet of Black Swans? Really?). These communications principles are even more relevant today.

Focus entirely on your audience. Every great talk is a gift, not a performance. When people are watching you on a screen or a stage, their instincts take over. They are unconsciously evaluating you - Are you sincere? Are you genuinely trying to help them? In short - do you care more about them or about yourself? If you really, truly care about them, they’ll feel it and they’ll pay more attention. If you don’t, they won’t.

Second: Tell stories. Because stories activate hormones in people’s brains. These hormones - dopamine, cortisol, oxytocin - capture and retain our attention. When you use sensory detail to describe a problem that your audience can relate to, your audience has to know how the story ends. How did the hero get out of that pickle? They’ll listen to you just to hear the happy ending.

Third: Be brief. I hope that the two-hour keynote fiesta with demos and customers and bells and whistles is obsolete. If we can serve our audience by focusing on just delivering the essential gifts they need, wrapped in stories that matter to them, we are really helping them.

Just living and coping seems to get harder with each new crisis. So let’s honor every person’s attention and deliver the best, briefest, most compelling, most useful content we can!
