Connecting through the small screen

User conferences are a great way to reach potential customers, to make existing customers feel great, to get partners, media and analysts on your side. That’s why we spend hundreds of millions of dollars on them every year.

But the Coronavirus doesn’t care about your business. It doesn’t care about the messages you need to deliver, the audiences you need to reach. If your conference is canceled, how can you still create great connections with people watching the digital version on a small screen?

First: Focus entirely on what your audience needs. Every great talk is a gift, not a performance. When people are watching you on a screen, their instincts take over. They are unconsciously evaluating you - Are you sincere? Are you genuinely trying to help them? In short - do you care more about them or about yourself? If you really, truly care about them, they’ll feel it and they’ll pay more attention. If you don’t, they won’t.

Second: Tell stories. Because stories activate hormones in people’s brains. These hormones - dopamine, cortisol, oxytocin - capture and retain our attention. When you use sensory detail to describe a problem that your audience can relate to, your audience has to know how the story ends. How did the hero get out of that pickle? They’ll listen to you just to hear the happy ending.

Third: Be brief. A two-hour keynote fiesta with demos and customers and bells and whistles is standard in the tech industry. If you can cut your virtual keynote down to a tightly-scripted and edited thirty minutes you stand a much better chance of keeping your audience engaged to hear all of your big news. Less is much more. Add links for customer soundbites, demos, product details. Focus on just delivering the essential gifts your audience needs, wrapped in stories that matter to them.
