Does it feel to you like every week this year brings us difficulties at a velocity and pace we’ve never seen before? It does to me!
So much of what we’re facing is too much to carry alone. But it’s only natural to wonder about our colleagues - some of whom we’ve never met in person. Who can we trust? Who has our back? Who trusts us? How can we grow that trust?
When you and your colleagues really trust and support each other you can create a bond that might lead to creating the next great company or project or product. Without trust, the intense collaboration and risk that’s needed to bring something wonderful into the world is impossible!
Trust is an organic thing that exists between two beings - if it’s respected and reciprocated it grows. You can build trust by being helpful. If you help when one of your peers is caving under the weight of a last-minute deadline or a heinous decision, you’ll earn a bit of their trust.
Trust is essential to communicating well. People listen to and follow people they trust. You earn trust by doing what you say you’ll do and not doing what you say you won’t. You earn trust by speaking to what’s real, not by gaslighting.
Can you be too trustworthy? Trusting and trustworthy are two different things. It may not always be shrewd to be trusting, but it is so powerful to be trustworthy. As trust becomes a rarer commodity, truly trustworthy people will stand out and be cherished.
