ISSUE 167

An act of service
“Speak to the suffering, and you will never lack an audience.”

-- Joseph Parker

The holidays are nearly upon us, so I’m thinking about hostessing and gifts, which reminds me of my mantra:

“Your talk is a gift, not a performance.”

Why do I tell every client that THIS is the hill I’ll die on as a communications coach?

Because if you want someone’s attention, what you’re saying must be worth their time. If it isn’t, not only will you lose their attention, you might undermine your brand. Time and attention are precious resources. We’re in a chaotic time of transition in our industry. People need help! If you don’t offer your audience anything useful, all you’ll gain is ill will.

Because people appreciate givers, not takers. Think about the needy attention-seekers in your life. Are these the people you call when you are facing a thorny problem? NO. We instinctively turn away from people who are all about themselves. We turn to people who help us see things we hadn’t noticed ourselves, we turn to people who encourage and support us.

Because no one will buy what you’re selling if it doesn’t meet a need or a desire they have. Joseph Parker may have been a minister, but his advice applies to all of us. Who in your audience is miserable because they are being pressured to integrate 18 different LLMs into one system? Who in your audience has so far failed to get their COO to fund a critical security initiative? We all suffer at work. Heal our suffering and you’ve given us an incredible gift!
