Pragmatism
“You can't always get what you want.”
-- The Rolling Stones
We can’t always get what we want. No matter how hard we work or how much we believe that what we want is the right thing, we can’t always get what we want. Sometimes, with great respect to Mick and Keith, we can’t get what we need either.
I’m writing this newsletter on Wednesday, November 6, filled with grief and bewilderment and trepidation. But seventy million Americans feel the opposite. They
are thrilled today.
One thing that’s profoundly confusing to almost any human trying to persuade another human is that the other human may not see the world the way WE see the world. Shifting a person’s perspective is a sort of miracle. It’s incredibly hard to do.
Whether we engage in civic discourse, sell enterprise software, or manage the schedule on a pickleball court, we need to work hard to understand the person on the other side of every conversation. We need to see what’s really there, not what we want to see.
Because what other choice do we have if we want to live, work and cooperate together?
“Everyone agreed that they learned a ton from you,” said a happy communications leader after I did a series of sessions with her executive
team.
