ISSUE 85

What do you know? What do you see?
“Is it Tuesday? Wait...no...is it Friday?”

- everyone these days

2021 is a chaotic year. We are all working so hard to envision and build our post-pandemic world. At the same time, we’re getting blasted daily with good and bad news. We’ve got Pandemic Senioritis. We are collectively going a bit insane as we try to understand what it’s safe to hope for and when.

As a communicator, it’s critical to understand and empathize with your audiences, especially now. Understanding the context of your audience’s world is the Fourth Thing That Every Great Communicator Does.

Who are the people you’re talking to? Why are they assembled? What language do they use? What are they hoping and dreaming about? What are their biggest worries? What do they want from YOU? Using the Who What What Table can help you. You can’t build a great All Hands deck, do a compelling keynote, or run a successful senior staff meeting unless you really understand your audience!

This matters just as much when you’re talking to the media. Let’s say you have an opportunity to talk to that influential reporter at The Wall Street Journal.

You must do as much research as you can before you decide to do the interview. What has this reporter written before? What does she say on Twitter about you? your company? your competitors? the industry? Has she moderated industry panels? Does she ask thoughtful or snarky questions? Based on what you learn, you’ll decide whether to engage with her. But you’re not done doing research!

When she agreed to take the interview with you, what did she say she wanted to talk about? What has she written about that subject? What has she written about your topic before? Who are your competitors that she’ll likely talk to to validate or disprove your story? Are there pundits she typically reaches out to? Do they know you and would they speak well of you?

When you really understand a reporter, you stand a much better chance of delivering a great interview, which gives you a much better chance of a great story.

When you really understand your team, your investors, your customers, the same thing is true. You’ll deliver what matters most to each audience and they’ll hear you. You’ll be a great communicator!
