ISSUE 142

Inventing the perfect communicator
“Just breathe.

Fiction writers get to build whatever world they choose. When I wrote the story of WidgetCo, I decided to make Monica, the company’s disciplined, courageous CEO, an absolutely amazing communicator.

Monica was presiding over chaos through most of the story. Did she lose her cool? No. Not even when Jones had a tantrum and tried to derail a leadership team meeting. Monica was able to ignore Jones’s outburst because she knew that what mattered in the moment was getting the right idea surfaced and given support.

Monica led with firm clarity. At a critical moment she hauled Clara and Marcus into her office and said: “Initiative is great, but stealth is not.”

Monica had stamina. On one of her worst afternoons: “Monica sat back in her chair, closed her eyes and wondered if she should just move to Jackson Hole and be a ski bum for the rest of her life. Then she sat up straight, took a sip of water, arranged her face into the perfect picture of confidence and reassurance and got on her fourth customer video call of the day.”

Monica knew that her most important resource was her team. Who was the first person she called to thank after her hugely successful keynote? Clara, who seeded the strategy the whole company embraced.

How did Monica build such exceptional skills? Well, part of her backstory is that she has discipline. She takes care of her body and her mind and gets the counsel and coaching she needs. Monica has her own leadership code. And, despite her hidden insecurities and the insane obstacles she faces, she finds the resilience to live by it.

We can all channel a bit of our inner Monica as we communicate and lead.
