ISSUE 87

Everything changes, all the time
Never deliver a presentation you wouldn’t want to sit through.

- the corporate motto of Duarte, Inc., one of the great presentation companies

No matter where you are - your All Hands video conference, the first in-person customer event you’ve held in 15 months, the exchange floor after ringing the bell - you are given the opportunity to speak because we assume you have something great to share, not because your ego needs basting.

Do not be a clueless narcissist - that person who doesn’t give a thought to what his audience wants to hear. Whenever you are giving a talk, always start with those people who’ve given you some of their most precious commodity - their attention.

What are their biggest concerns, obstacles, fears, and hopes? What do you have to offer to resolve their problems and make their hopes real? Do you have an inspiring new point of view that will help them define even more exciting hopes? That’s what you focus on when you speak.

So, who is your audience? What do they want?? A provocative idea, a penetrating insight that could change their business, their careers, their lives, a vision to execute, a worthwhile reason to get out of bed every day. Even before the pandemic, audiences were jaded. Now? Who knows!

As we’re opening back up, our audiences are learning how to focus again. So let’s say you’re holding your first big customer event - a live/video conference hybrid. You have a whole day of keynotes, panels, and demos. Here’s at least some of what your audience is thinking:

  • Why did I fly in for this? I could have watched from home and cooked my own food!
  • Why didn’t I fly in for this? I could have gotten away from my prison of a home office.
  • Wait, is that my mother FaceTiming me? I’d better make sure she’s OK.
  • I can’t stand another minute in this chair. I can’t believe I used to sit at these things for hours at a time.
  • Am I ever going to see a truly interesting demo?
  • I’m tired. How long is this guy going to talk?
  • I hope the kids did their homework. . .
  • He’s right about ___________.
  • Wait, did I just miss something?

In the last fifteen months, our attention has been fragmented like never before. Now, as we co-create our new normal, please spend time and energy thinking about how to reach, connect with, and educate your audiences.

Your focus needs to be 10,000% on us. It’s never about you.
